About

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the natural lens of the eye becomes clouded. It is often a result of the natural aging process, as proteins on the lens slowly break down and form clumps, making it harder to see.

Many patients describe vision with cataracts as looking through a foggy car windshield. As the cataracts impair your vision, things look hazier and blurrier, and colors may appear duller. Common cataract symptoms include:

  • Blurry or cloudy vision
  • Colors appear duller, faded, or yellowed
  • Heightened sensitivity to light
  • Double vision
  • Halos, streaks, or glare around lights
  • Poor night vision, especially when driving or reading
  • Needing frequent prescription changes

What to Expect During Cataract Surgery at Nova Eye Experts

Cataract surgery at Nova Eye Experts can restore clear sight and give you the independence to do all your favorite things again without worrying about cataracts clouding your vision. It’s a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that takes about 10-15 minutes.

Your cataract surgeon will begin by numbing the surface of your eye with anesthetic eye drops. Then, they will make a small incision in your cornea, break up the cataract-affected lens, and replace it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL) of your choice.

Once you have healed from the procedure, you can expect to see much clearer than you did with cataracts, as your IOL will be completely cataract-free

Technology IOL Options

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are clear artificial lenses that replace the eye's natural lens during cataract surgery. Standard (monofocal) IOLs provide vision correction for nearsightedness or farsightedness at one distance, while advanced technology IOLs can correct astigmatism and sharpen your vision across multiple distances, reducing your reliance on glasses and contacts. At Nova Eye Experts, we offer a wide selection of premium IOLs:

Multifocal/Trifocal IOLs

Multifocal IOLs are advanced technology IOLs that provide clear vision at multiple distinct distances. They are made up of concentric rings of varying powers that your brain can shift between depending on the task at hand. Nova Eye Experts is happy to offer the PanOptix Pro IOL, a trifocal lens that delivers crisp, clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. It also provides blue light filtering to prevent digital eye strain while using electronic devices and protects from damaging UV rays that can contribute to eye conditions.

Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) IOLs

Extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs are designed to provide visual clarity across a broad range of distances while significantly reducing disturbances, such as halos and glare. They are a good choice for patients with active lifestyles or who may not be suitable candidates for multifocal IOLs due to eye conditions such as macular degeneration or corneal disease. Nova Eye Experts offers the Vivity EDOF IOL, an advanced technology IOL that uses proprietary non-diffractive X-Wave technology to provide smoother transitions between distances. This design stretches light rather than splitting it, resulting in fewer visual interruptions while maintaining optimal clarity.

Toric IOLs

Toric IOLs are specifically made for patients with astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common refractive error in which the cornea is shaped more like a football than the standard circular shape, distorting vision at multiple distances. Toric IOLs are designed to work seamlessly with this shape, providing patients with clearer vision. Many multifocal and extended-depth-of-focus lenses also come in toric versions for patients seeking greater independence from visual aids. During your pre-operative consultation, your eye doctor at Nova Eye Experts can discuss the options available at our practice and help you determine the best IOL for your budget, vision needs, and goals.
